No man is an island

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man’s death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Virtual vs Real

Posted: June 3, 2014 by Murdock in Poems, thoughts

La soledad del hombre
su insatisfacción,
el consumo de la vida,
a grandes bocanadas.
El ordenador, móvil,
correo…
lectura interruptus
de esta sobreabundancia.
Luchas dialecticas,
sentimientos virtuales,
amistades de pantalla.
Y yo no percibo nada,
ni sus gestos,
ni sus olores,
ni la calidez,
o actitud de sus palabras.
Sólo fuerzas latentes
parapetradas frente
a una irreal ventana,
Sí de mi buscas algo más,
mi cuerpo, mi alma,
sólo lo encontrarás
al otro lado de la pantalla.

What I aspired to be,
And was not, comforts me:
A brute I might have been, but would not sink i’ the scale.

Alone – Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then—in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent or the fountain,
From the red cliff or the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
