Bessie Braddock: "Winston, you are drunk, and what’s more you are disgustingly drunk."

Winston Churchill: "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly."
Whilst Churchill’s bodyguard testified that this exchange with Braddock (pictured) did occur in 1946, this popular joke had been doing the rounds since the 1880s. It is likely that if Churchill's riposte did take place, he was in fact inspired by previous versions he would have heard.
